Clearing the Field: A Bonus!

A perfect clear occurs when you clear all colored blocks, leaving an empty field. For instance:

Place the first 7 pieces in this shape’s form.Skim with a T piece.
34
Fill in the remaining cavity with S and Z pieces. After the final line clear, you get an empty field. This is a perfect clear.

A perfect clear sends 10 garbage lines in Puyo Puyo Tetris 1 and 2, and Tetris Effect: Connected to the opponent. In most non-official Tetris games, this is 10 as well.

Therefore, they are potent in many games, allowing you to send a quick burst to the opponent.

Perfect Clear Patterns

Making a perfect clear is extremely easy. Please stay with me for just 2 pages!

You will soon blast your beloved friends with this powerful technique!

1. The Standard Perfect Clear Pattern

Given the 7-piece randomizer, you can place the first 7 of each guaranteed piece in the following pattern. This is called a perfect clear opener (PCO). This has a 61% chance to perfect clear.

    Diagram Set 11-2
    AB
Observe the 4×4 rectangle in A’s left stack, made of L, J, O, and I pieces. B’s 4 patterns show that these 4 pieces can be placed in any orientation. The perfect clear will work as long as the L, J, O, and I pieces make a 4×4 square.

To create a perfect clear, one must fill the remaining cavity with 3 pieces so the last line clear clears the entire field, leaving zero blocks behind.

    2. A Non-Scary Number of Solutions

Adding 3 pieces into the cavity to solve the pattern may seem daunting.

However, as amazing as it sounds, most people accomplish this feat through simple trial and error!

No worries, I will not burden you with too many details in this super casual book.

I will merely present you with a few examples. I leave the rest of the experimentation to your good hands!

First, make the standard perfect clear opener:

Make the perfect clear opener. This is the generic shape. You must fill the cavity with 3 pieces.

Now, your goal is to fill the cavity in B with 3 pieces to make the perfect clear. Here are some examples of how to fill it:

Honestly, these 7 cover a vast percentage of total solutions. You are set to go!

See? I promised it would not be so hard!

    In a Nutshell

Perfect clears are mighty openers in some Tetris versions, sending 10 lines of garbage.

In games like Tetris Effect or Tetris 99, they are more potent as it is easier to get them off. Once you start a line clear, you will not receive any interrupting attacks that can disrupt the perfect clear as long as all subsequent line clears are connected. This mostly does not apply in Puyo Puyo Tetris’ Tetris vs Tetris versus mode.
