Downstacking and Combos

To downstack well in Tetris, one mainly has to note several important guidelines:

Joining the stack when downstacking.
Creating a tapering well towards the middle.
Minimizing the covering of the future garbage holes.
Use horizontal skims (the burning method) to skim the surface with singles to extend combo count.
Downstack with combos if you can, by maximizing combos through the colored and garbage lines.
Use less obvious piece placements when downstacking to increase one’s options.
Give up downstacking if a string of smooth downstack combos is not apparent.
If the field is relatively jumbled and parity imbalanced (jagged), upstack and smoothen the stack first before downstacking.
If no downstack options are apparent, upstack to other attacks, such as a T-spin or Tetris.
Time your garbage to start garbage blocking (for games with this setting) to defend yourself.
Watch for parity imbalances when downstacking. Sometimes you must give up a downstack sequence if it messes up the field too much.
Counterspiking with the opponent’s clean garbage.
Use T-spins or Tetrises to protect oneself before initiating a combo from 3 or 4-wide.
