The earlier chapters have shown that you can create offensive garbage using doubles, triples, Tetris line clears, and combos.
However, they are not even the most powerful moves in the game!
An even more powerful setup is the mighty T-spin—the defining trait of high-level Tetris.
Now, this is a super-casual Tetris book, so I will not frighten you away with too many advanced methods.
If you can just spare me the next 20 minutes of your life, I can teach you how to include this new arsenal to blow away your foes!
A T-Spoon? What is That?
What is a T-spin?
A T-spin is a method in which one rotates a T piece into a cavity, creating a line clear that sends enhanced lines of garbage to the opponent.
A T-spin is more efficient than a Tetris because it sends twice as many garbage lines per line cleared as the latter.
Here is how to make one:
First, recognize this basic T-like shape in the following images below:
| Diagram Set 8-1 | |
| 1 | |

| A T-like shape. |
Then, create an overhang above the T-shaped cavity to make a T-spin. This can be done as shown below:
| 2 |

| Put an O over it to make an overhang. |
To perform the T-spin, do this:
| 2 (continued) | 3 |

| The same image as step 2 in the last diagram. | Move the T piece to the height above the T-spin cavity. |
| 4 | 5 |

| Rotate it in the correct direction just above it to soft drop it down. | Soft drop it into the cavity below. Rotate it to make it fit into the cavity. |
| 6 |

| Once the T piece locks, it triggers a T-spin double, clearing 2 lines. |
This is a T-spin double because it clears 2 lines. It sends 4 garbage lines—the same as a Tetris line clear. A T-spin single clears 1 line, sending 2 garbage lines. A T-spin triple clears 3 lines, sending 6 garbage lines.
Since this is a super-casual guide, my main focus is simply T-spin doubles.
Idiot-Proof T-Spin Manufacturing
If you are a super-casual Tetris player, T-spins are formidable constructs that seem unimaginably challenging to create.
Here is your ticket to joining the T-spin elites in a simple, idiot-proof manner that even a 5-year-old can learn easily.
1. T-Shapes Everywhere
The easiest way to make T-spins is to spot T-like cavities everywhere, like these:
| Diagram Set 8-2 | |
| A | B |

| Mid-game situations with T-like shapes. The above A progresses to A1, A2, or A3 (3 different alternatives) in the following diagram. B progresses to B1 later. |
So, what do you do after spotting one?
Well, you can relax and chill. This is because more than half of the T-spin has already been created for you!
You merely have to build up the remaining parts of it to make the T-spin. This often simply involves adding a simple T-spin overhang, like this:
| Diagram Set 8-3 | |
| A1 | A2 |

| A3 | B1 |

| Ways of adding an overhang with a single mino to make a complete T-spin setup, ready for the kill. A1 to A3 share the same mid-game pattern: the last diagram set’s A. |
That is it! Take a deep breath! You have done it!
Such simple, opportunistic T-spins are the most straightforward to spot mid-game. With this, you can T-spin without fear!
2. Upping the T-Game
Now that you have learned the fundamentals of making a T-spin, we can increase the challenge.
What do you see in the following diagrams?
| Diagram Set 8-4 | |
| A | B |

| C | D |

| Common mid-game situations. |
Here is a hint:
| Diagram Set 8-5 | |
| A1 | B1 |

| C1 | D1 |

| Hints added in the pink blocks. These continue from the last diagram set’s A to D, respectively. Hence, A leads to A1, B leads to B1, and so on. |
That is right! They are slightly harder-to-spot parts of a T-spin setup!
They are not as obvious as the last section’s T-shaped cavities. However, just by adding a few more pieces, you can complete the T-shaped cavity:
| Diagram Set 8-6 | |
| A2 | B2 |

| C2 | D2 |

| A few pieces are added to make complete T-spin setups. These continue from the last diagram set’s A1 to D1, respectively. |
Do you now see how easy it is to complete a partially shaped T-shape cavity?
With this, you can make the next easy step of merely topping it with an overhang to complete the T-spin setup.
Congratulations! You have now increased your mid-game T-spin foresight even more!
Spot these mid-game partial T-like shapes, complete them, and add an overhang to complete the T-spin setup!
3. Garbage: A Godsend
Here is another foolproof method that easily boosts your T-spin foresight in minutes:
| Diagram Set 8-7 | |
| A1 | B1 |

| C1 | D1 |

| These are some mid-game fields. The gray blocks are the garbage rows. The lavender blocks are the upstacked non-garbage rows. |
Do you see the T-spin? That is right! When you receive garbage, the top row of the garbage only contains 1 hole.
This is the nature of garbage in most Tetris games.
Hence, you only have to make an overhang, often with the S and Z pieces, to make a T-spin, like this below!
| Diagram Set 8-8 | |
| A2 | B2 |

| C2 | D2 |

| A few pieces are added to make complete T-spin setups. These continue from the last diagram set’s A1 to D1, respectively. |
Knowing this simple trick turns your opponent’s attack into your advantage. You transform their garbage holes into T-spin opportunities!
4. Making T-Spins Out of Skims
You can make T-spins out of skims:
| Diagram Set 8-9 | |
| 1 | 2 |

| An L-skim leads to an easy T-spin double. |
This has already been covered in the Skim Lines Like a Pro chapter.
In a Nutshell
T-spins are the defining trait of high-level gameplay.
However, you do not need to spend years mastering them. This chapter’s tricks help you make a significant portion of mid-game T-spins with ease!
| Summary |
| Make T-spins easily by spotting T-like shapes mid-game. When you spot partial T-like shapes, complete them to make a T-spin. Make T-spins out of garbage holes by making a simple overhang. Make T-spins out of skims by balancing both sides of an imbalanced stack! |
